abstract
The lecture will cover the history of historic preservation in the United States, theoretical underpinnings and range of practice. Also discussed will be the role of institutions both public and private and non-profit groups in furthering the practice of preservation to make it more equitable and relevant to contemporary times. In the last two decades the practice of historic preservation in the United States has expanded from its patriotic, nostalgic and Eurocentric roots to integrate with discipline as diverse as sociology, geography, ecology, landscape architecture and urban planning. Today the field is more socially conscious and self-critical, signaling the dawn of a new era of Historic Preservation theory and practice. The lecture will familiarize students with these themes within Historic Preservation.
