Gwenda van der Vaart
Dr. Gwenda van der Vaart is an Assistant Professor Socio-Spatial Planning at the Department of Spatial Planning and Environment at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
She conducted her PhD research titled ‘Arts & Resilience in a Rural Community. The value of arts-based community activities in resilience-building in Pingjum, northern Netherlands’ at the Department of Cultural Geography of the same faculty. In her PhD research, she took on a fresh perspective on community resilience and conducted an innovative research project, using a mix of creative and arts-based research methods.
Gwenda her research interests include community development, arts & culture, sense of place, and creative and arts-based research methods. She is currently involved in the cultural project ‘Gronings Vuur’, which travels through the Province of Groningen and aims to strengthen the cultural infrastructure and contribute to people’s awareness of societal issues that are at play in their municipality. As a lecturer, Gwenda is involved in several courses at both the Bachelor and Master level.
